ChatGPT Ads: What Brands Need to Know

ChatGPT Ads are now available in Austria and Germany. The essentials on placement, targeting, creatives, tracking and running a first test.

As of 11 September 2026. Features and availability may change at short notice during the current product phase.

01Ads appear below the answer

Example of a Product Ad in ChatGPT

ChatGPT Ads are clearly labelled ads that appear below a ChatGPT answer. They are separated from the organic answer and do not change its content.

Advertisers do not get access to private chats, conversation history, Memory or personal details. In the Ads Manager, they only see aggregated performance data such as impressions, clicks and conversions.

Since 31 August 2026, self-service access through the OpenAI Ads Manager has also been available in Austria and Germany. Ads may appear in the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu remain ad-free according to OpenAI. Ads are also not shown to people under 18 or in sensitive conversations.

The key difference from other channels is the moment of intent: people are not just searching for a keyword. They often describe in detail what they need, which requirements matter and which options they are comparing.

02Conversation context replaces the keyword list

ChatGPT Ads are not controlled through exact keywords. The system considers the current conversation context, the landing page, the title and copy, as well as so-called Context Hints.

Context Hints describe the situations in which an offer can be useful. The more specific that description is, the better the system can understand relevance.

Too broad: “Running shoes”

Better: “Well-cushioned everyday running shoes for beginners training for their first 5K.”

A good hint describes more than the product. It names the need and the use case while staying focused on one clear offer. If two situations need different messages or landing pages, they belong in separate ad groups.

Context Hints guide the matching process. They do not guarantee delivery for particular words or conversations.

03Good ads help with the next decision

A ChatGPT Ad should fit the situation without creating the impression that the brand has read a private chat.

A first test needs several clearly differentiated variants:

  • Benefit: What practical advantage does the person get?
  • Situation: When is the offer particularly useful?
  • Proof: Which specific feature makes the choice credible?

The title names the most important value. The copy adds new information. The image stays simple, and the landing page leads to exactly the content or offer promised by the ad.

Alongside Standard Ads for services, brand offers and individual landing pages, there are Product Ads for retailers. They use structured product data such as images, titles, prices and availability.

04Measurement starts before launch

The Ads Manager supports campaigns for reach, clicks and conversions. For a useful test, however, marketing teams should not wait until launch to think about measurement.

At least these points need to be defined in advance:

  • unique UTM parameters for every ad click,
  • a defined conversion event,
  • the OpenAI Pixel, Conversions API or both,
  • a feedback loop into the CRM if lead quality matters.

A high CTR alone says very little. What matters is whether the ad reaches relevant people, whether they respond and whether that response creates a measurable business outcome.

There are not yet reliable general CPC or CTR benchmarks. Early tests show different click costs and sometimes limited delivery. A first test should therefore create learning rather than immediately replace the predictable scale of a long-optimised Search account.

05When a first test is worth running

ChatGPT Ads are particularly interesting for offers where people explain, compare and weigh several requirements. This includes software, travel, education, higher-priced products and services that need explanation.

A test makes sense when:

  • the Ads account is approved and billing is active,
  • several context-relevant creative variants are ready,
  • a suitable landing page is available,
  • conversions or lead quality can be measured reliably,
  • the team has budget for learning and optimisation.

If you need guaranteed scale in the short term or do not yet have clean tracking, solve those foundations first.

06Four weeks are enough for a first learning cycle

Week 1 · Prepare measurement

Define the objective, conversion event, UTM logic and tracking setup.

Week 2 · Test variants

Combine three to five Context Hints with several clearly differentiated creatives.

Week 3 · Interpret the results

Look at delivery, CTR, CPC, landing-page behaviour and early conversion signals together.

Week 4 · Decide

Scale winners, rebuild weak approaches or stop the test. The decision should be based on criteria defined in advance.

Conclusion

ChatGPT Ads put brands into a specific decision-making moment. That is where the channel’s potential lies.

A good test needs precise Context Hints, different creatives, a suitable landing page and a measurement setup that reaches all the way to the business outcome. Teams that prepare these foundations properly can learn early which conversation situations and messages work.

Bacon & Bold supports this process with the AI Answer Check and First Mover Setup. Together, we review relevant questions, develop Context Hints and creatives, and build a test plan that fits your offer and objectives.
