TikTok from a performance branding perspective

Substantially revised on . Originally published on .
A good TikTok video can reach people who have never heard of your brand. For a business, though, the work starts before filming: what should someone know about you after watching, and what should happen next? In performance branding, we assess whether that attention can serve a business objective.
Digital basics on TikTok
Securing your username is a start. A maintained profile also explains who you are, what you offer and how to contact you. If you publish regularly, someone needs to answer questions in the comments.
For your first videos, talk to sales: which questions come up before a purchase? Show the product in use, explain a common misconception or answer a specific question. That gives you a series without having to find a new trend every week. Include filming, editing and community management in the plan. Organic publishing has no media charge, but the work still costs money.

Digital advantages: test ideas and promote them
Organic posts can help you identify promising openings and topics. Try two different openings for the same product question, for example. Look beyond views: do people keep watching, ask questions or visit the profile?
A successful post is a candidate for an advertising test. Whether it works with paid distribution or on another channel needs to be measured there. Decide what will count as success before you start: qualified enquiries, purchases or a defined communication objective. A low cost per view alone will not answer that question.
TikTok has targeting settings too
TikTok offers conventional targeting settings, including demographics, audiences and interests, alongside smart targeting. Its targeting documentation describes configuration at ad group level. Available options depend in part on the market. The algorithm does not make every decision for you: objectives, creative and settings need to be planned together.
Build videos around search questions
Make the question your video answers clear in its opening, spoken content and description. This is a practical approach to social SEO, not a promise of a search position. Search for your product questions and look for answers that are still missing.
TikTok platform insights
Austria: 2.8 million in the first half of 2026
TikTok reports an average of 2.8 million monthly active recipients in Austria from January to June 2026. The source is its DSA transparency report, AMAR table (ZIP). This is the report's usage measure, not bookable advertising reach or a count of prospective customers for your business.
Worldwide: one billion is a historical milestone
The frequently quoted billion monthly users comes from TikTok's announcement on 27 September 2021. It describes that point in time, not an audience forecast for 2026. Your target audience and estimates available in the ad account are more useful when planning an Austrian test.
What does this mean for your budget?
Start with a manageable test: a few topics, several video ideas and an agreed objective. Include production and community management costs. If it brings suitable enquiries or sales, you have a basis for increasing the budget. See our social media services for content planning and paid distribution.
